Is it safe to use pH down and pH up to get rid of and increase the pH balance in an aquarium or is it safer to do it the old fashioned way?

First ask yourself why you are trying to change the pH. Odds are very good it doesn't need changing. On the extremely rare occassion I need to change the pH is a tank from what is from my tap, I change the tank with the "old fashioned" methods and the water in my water changes with faster chemical adjustments. But again, I would caution you that odds are very good you have no need to change your pH.

Chemicals shouldn't be used to adjust the pH. They are very unstable and can lead to catastrophic issues with balanced water quality. Instead, use a wad of peat moss in the filter to lower the pH and some crushed coral in the filter to higher it. Having a pH that varies is stressful on the fish. Even if your pH is a little off, it is safer than having a pH that is always changing. Good luck!
