So... I have an Earthlink cable modem. Recently I added a buffalo 802.11g router so I could work from home using my business laptop. No problems there. I plugged in the router and had no problems accessing the net from my desktop PC and my laptop had no problems finding the wireless connection and using VPN to access get to my work account.

So... the next step was to dust off that old laptop with win98-se sitting in the corner and get it set up for the kids to use. I installed an 802.11g PC card. It seems to find my router and get a valid connection. However, I don't seem to be able to see the outside world. For example, I can't open an external web page.

Any clues as to what might be the problem?

Make sure that there are no hard-coded NIC settings on the Win98 box. Clear them if there are.

Don't mess with the DHCP server settings as another user suggested. The fact that 2 other machines work properly says that that is OK.

Do keep in mind that Win98 support for PC Card slots is less than wonderful and support for wireless networks pretty much sucks. You may need to upgrade it to Win2k or XP to get it to work.

do you mean the laptop is using win98 OS?...i think that there is no problem with the router because it's purpose is only for capturing wireless network in range..however,i think it's your modem..the modem is probably not compatible with the OS coz previous version of OS requires the device to be installed with a driver that is provided with the device that you bought..compared to XP,majority of devices dont need to install a driver from a cd..they just need to be plugged in an ready for use...modem is needed to browse the web..router is only for getting or setting a network either wired or wireless...although you are connected...it doesnt mean you are connected globally...it is only connected in your network meaning you can share files and printers among pc in your house because you have established a network connection which is LAN..i think your modem is not working...try installing the modem driver or just change the OS to XP or newer version...hope that helps..

Sounds to me like you have the wrong settings with your DHCP server. I would check those.
