A vasectomy is a piece of cake. It only takes 15 min. There are no side effects, or complications, as long as he, FOLLOWS INSTRUCTIONS. But if he goes out playing football the day after the surgery, or anything else stupid, then he is asking for trouble.
I got mine done on a Friday afternoon, and went back to work on Monday. I drove myself home, after the surgery. The only stops were Walgreens and and Blockbuster video. The rest of the weekend, I sat around.
That was 20 years ago. Technology has improves since then, so I can imagine it is even simpler today.
You can tell him, that Fred got his for his 22'nd birthday. Fred is now 41, and the novelty has yet to ware off. You might call it the gift that keeps on giving.
Good luck

I got a vasectomy about 2 years ago. You must make an appointment to see a urologist. The urologist will explain the procedure and answer any questions you and your boyfriend may have. The procedure itself take maybe 2 hours. They put you under so you can't feel anything at all. Once the procedure is done, you wake up with everything down there wrapped and iced. There is only a slight ache in the region for a couple of days. It is important to relax for about 72 hours. You get to serve him (maybe that will be a selling point). Once the 72 hour waiting period is over, only minor discomort will occur for maybe a week until everything heals. As for the performance after the procedure; there is absolutely no difference in how everything works. The only difference is the absence of sperm. The ejaculate remains the same. The erection remains the same. Everything works perfectly fine, with one major benefit--no more kids.

© Vasectomy is virtually irreversible. (Note: it can still be reversed for a minority of those who want to reverse.) Now, just make sure that you will stay together long enough or forever. If you were to part ways and he wants to have a child with a new partner, he will not be able to.
Otherwise, before the procedure, make him store some of his sperm (cryogenize), so for whatever may happen. Unless he cannot provide for any further child down the road.
As a plus for vasectomy, there is minimal danger for a guy to undergo it than for a woman to undergo tubal ligation. Vasectomy is not surgery intensive, just a little cut on the skin, whereas ligation is a big surgery and the tubes are inside the body of the woman (there is always a risk when surgery is done.)

I personally wouldn't do it, because I don't want to be a eunuch. I know they don't actually remove 'em, but the definition of a eunuch is a man who can no longer have kids. Besides, one of the men I know who got the surgery gets testosterone shots now... apparently they did something wrong and disconnected one.
There are nonsurgical options, you know? Condoms? Birth control pill?

My boyfriend had this done and has no problems whatsoever. Sex is the same as before. I can't tell a difference at all. In fact he and I joke that the doctors only "pretended" to do the surgery.

I got mine 10 years ago. It was nothing. I was a bit sore for about three days. I just sat around the house, and played with my dog.

I went in as outpatient on Fri and was at work Mon, a little tender but OK. Most of it is in his head, you know, knifes down there and so on. It was well worth any problems.
