I had a voluntary drawing at my baby shower. People brought a pack of diapers to be entered into the drawing and the winner got 2 movie tickets and some candy and popcorn. Sort of silly, but everyone loved it and I didn't have to buy diapers for 3 months.

Precious - that idea is great! Bringing diapers to be entered in to a drawing.. wow, that's a wonderful idea :]
As far as the best gift, it sounds lame, but sometimes giftcards are the best idea. It doesn't have to be a lot.. you can go to Target, Walmart, Sears, etc. and get them a $10 giftcard at each store, or buy some giftcards and then get a nice baby basket (with an outfit, cream, baby wipes, etc. inside.) You could even make your own baby gift basket!

A great gift is a "medicine bag". Tylenol, Motrin, gas drops, teething gel, hydrogen peroxide (i never had it in the house till my daughter), small travel size container of q-tips (for the changing table), desitin, lotion, etc.

my favorite and best gift that saved us many many nights!!!
was the one my hubby bought me it was a WOMB BEAR (you know the teddy bears that have the womb sounds). there so adorable and worth it helps soothe newborns and baby's of all ages:)
also another helpful one was the baby 1st aid kit came with Tylenol and mylicon and bandaids and clippers etc...

Water! Nobody ever thinks of water and you usually have a few people that would rather that than soda or tea or something.

DIAPERS!! steer clear of newborn size - they grow out of them too quickly. get size 1 or 2.
