It really depends. With my first child, they had me so numb that they could have been sawing my legs off with a butter knife and I wouldn't have known the difference. As a result, I had no urge to push. When I started to push I had no idea if I was doing it at all. I learned my lesson after that. I told the doctor that I wanted my epidural turned way down low for my second child. That worked beautifully! I felt no pain, but I did feel the pressure when it was time to push. That made all the difference. With my first I pushed for hours, but with my second, it was one contraction, 3 pushes, less than 5 minutes from start to finish and I had a baby.
The nurses will check the monitor and will let you know when you are contracting. I held my hand on my belly and I could feel it harden. Don't worry; the staff will guide you through it.
Good luck!

I still felt the urge to push and still felt the contractions. Everyone's bodies react differently to the epidural.

I had an epidural & had no urge to push whatsoever. My doctor actually had to tell me when I had to push. Everyone is different but I know I couldn't feel a THING.

The medication via epidural is normally stopped by a certain time so that the woman can feel when it's time to push. In some cases, a woman is still feeling numb, so yes, in a case such as that, she will rely on someone telling her when to push.
Hope this helps. :)

I felt the urge to push with all 3 of my epidurals. If you can't tell then a nurse or the dr will tell you.

No you don't or I never did. They told me to push and I did so. A epidural is a wonderful thing.

You will still feel the urge. All it does is take away the pain from the contractions. What it feels like is like when you have a bm; you still push, but it doesn't hurt.

usually you don't want to get an epidural that close to when you're going to push. my epidural was just wearing off when i was ready to push so i could feel it. but yes, if you can't feel your bottom half still, they will tell you when to push, they usually tell you when even if you can feel it.
