The whole thing was a joke...
...Its billed as real questions from real people...but its really only questions deemed "appropriate" by CNN.
...I sincerely doubt that the candidates on stage would readily agree to a "debate" that was NOT filtered or "overseen" by friendly media types that would insure that no hard or embarrassing questions would surface.
.Too risky for politicians without scripted answers / deflections-they may actually have to reveal that they really have no plan(s) or specific "fix" just a boatload of humane sounding lofty ideals and "sincere" and or "empathetic " desires to help get everyone happy and on the "same page"....
The snowman was selected to inject humor ,fill time, raise the "dangers of global warming with the standard "save the children' mantra or simply because it would be "different/cutting edge..." pick your favorite lol

I liked it when Kusinich said CNN placed him all the way to the left on purpose. Then the moderators replying "we couldn't find anyone who could be." or something like that. It was a riot.
