It depends upon the specific router. Many will show you who is on if you log onto the router and go to the LAN config page or the DHCP page. Each router is different and sometimes different firmware of the same router is different. Experiment with it.

Finally, learn how to use the security. If you laptop cannot connect, you have configured it improperly. Meanwhile, turn off the router when you are not on the unit - it will kick off free loaders for the time you are down.

You can usually go into the router's management software (built-in to the router). Read your manual for details.

Or you can try:

(1) Check your IP address. Rest your mouse on the wireless icon in your tray and it should tell you (something like 192.168.1.4).
(2) Open Internet Explorer. Type in the IP address of your computer, but replace the last number with 1 (something like 192.168.1.1). This will give you access to your router's management system. Try "admin" for username and blank password. Or "admin" for both. Or "password" for password.
(3) Once you're in the software, look for wireless, or status, or LAN. Different routers have different software, so can't tell you exactly where to look.

While you're at it, you should really change the password so others cannot change your settings.

several ways

1) instal a program called Network Magic

- it builds a map of the network and as well tells you who is online

http://www.networkmagic.com

the first 30 days are a trial version with printer and file sharing. After the 30 day trial period the free version will still tell you the infomaton,

Next : it depends how handy you are with computers
Log into the router control panel

http://portforward.com/

You can go to 2 areas

1): the router status area> lan

it will show you who has been on your network ( may have and are not know)

Here is a photo of a linksys control panel

http://www.techarp.com/article/Wireless_Security/router_01.gif

On the right is "status"
You want "lan"

Next you can tell who is online on your wireless network at any time

go again

http://www.techarp.com/article/Wireless_Security/router_01.gif

turn on the "mac filter"
turn on
set to default "limit those listed"
> edit mac filter list

if you scan in there

http://www.techarp.com/article/Wireless_Security/router_01.gif

you will get a list of who is online at that moment
secondly you can lock them out with that mac limit service (lock out by mac address - the number on the card)
