Why were many intellectuals attracted to both philosophies in the 1930's and what social factors contributed to the rise of both?

Existentialism is the opposite of communism. Communism is very empirical. Communism is a police state that believes in crass materialism. Communism is not a philosophy and never has been, and neither has Marxism been a philosophy, they are economic systems.

Existentialism never set the stage for WWII. Stalin made a pact with Hitler and both Nazis and Communists invaded Poland and started WWII together.

Disregarding what they were, I think any case you tried to make for those two idea systems contributing to WWII would be extremely weak. You'd have a better chance of making the case that WWII was the inevitable outcome of the French Revolution of 1789.
