How long was the bike sitting? Was fuel left in the carbs before it was parked? Sounds like the carbs need to be cleaned.

How long was the bike sitting before you began having trouble? You said it ran when you sprayed starting fluid in it. Why were you doing that? It sounds like the carbs are clogged with old gas and need cleaned.
If the bike was running just days before then you have some kind of ignition malfunction. Take a spark plug out and lay it against the engine and turn the bike over to check for spark. You might want to check at least 2 of them. If it's sparking good the problem might be the carbs. Get a shop manual and trouble shoot the problem.

Well,if it backfires, petrol is getting to it.
It has to be an electric related problem in the coils ,plugs or the cdi unit. Its not firing correctly whatever it is.
Also, just check for a dirty air filter.
May possibly be a dirty carb but I dont think so.
lift a plug lead off and see what the spark is like.orange spark=poor, blue spark=good

Fuel pump (if it has one) fuel filter / is there fuel in float bowls? Petcock clogged/ gummed up carbs? Check the easy things and clean carbs last. Good luck.

Check the spark plugs again, then clean the carbs.
Slightly dirty carbs can foul the spark plugs.
Change the plugs and it will run, until the plugs foul again.
It's an endless cycle.
Check the cylinder compression and adjust the valves.
