i have bet with some friends i say that lake erie and the surround lake are connected to the alantic ocean

They are connected, via the St. Lawrence Seaway, but the salt levels are extrememly low in the Great Lakes, especially compared to the ocean.

All lakes connected to rivers are connected to an ocean, but that does not mean that salt water from the ocean gets into them. Check Lake Erie's altitude 571 feet per Google Earth, including the drop of Niagara Falls.

There certainly is salt (sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, calcium chloride and other salts) in Lake Erie and it's concentration has been increasing. More than likely due to run-off. It is a cause for concern.

Also salt mines in Cuyahoga and Lake Counties extend out under Lake Erie.

The salt isn't due to the lakes connection with the ocean. River water carries dissolved salts into the lakes. When the water evaporates the salt is left behind.
