If an elephant never forgets, why is the Republican hero Ronald Reagan? If an elephant is brave, why did the Republicans nominate a deserter who's afraid of hard work?At least when the Democrats nominated Bill Clinton, he, unlike Bush and Cheney, wasn't supporting a war he was too scared to fight in himself. He knew it was wrong in 1967; Bush and Cheney still think it was right 40 years later.
And the reason the Democratic symbol is the donkey is because, way back in the 1830s, an opponent called Andrew Jackson a jackass. He was the first President to call himself a Democrat rather than a Democratic-Republican, usually then shortened to "Republican"; while today's Republicans are descended from the Federalists and Whigs, who were also for big business at the expense of the common man. Jackson took the "jackass" comment as a badge of honor, and that was that. Hail Old Hickory, a great general and one of our better Presidents, and the man who, more than any other, invented modern American politics. (Credit also to Thomas Jefferson, the true founder of the party and the other contender for the inventor role.)
