You get Silver for free and 1 month of Gold for free. If you decide to sign up for Gold after the free month sign up for a year because it is a much better value! Also be sure you have Broadband internet otherwise it will not work.

You get the silver version for free. This allows you to download demos, xbox live arcade games, etc. You have to have a gold account on xbox live to play online games and that is a monthly fee. The xbox should also come with a limited time (30 day?) trial gold membership.

As the other guys said, you get Silver Membership free, but if you want to play games + chat online then you need Gold Membership. This can be bought from Gaming stores in the form of membership cards (monthly or yearly) or online.
The best value comes from the Yearly though, I saved about 25% of the cost if I recall

-xbox 360 comes with xbox live silver which allows you to communicate and talk with your friends, download, etc.
-you have xbox live silver for the rest of your life but you need to pay to get xbox live gold which allows you to communicate and talk AND play online as well
-if you have either a modem or a router, then all you need to do is connect one end of an ethernet cable to the modem or router and the other end to the back of the 360
-for xbox live gold, i thinks its about $8 a month to pay for but you always have xbox live silver an thats always free
