The question on the form I'm filling out says (16a minus 16b), so in my case it would be 16,211 minus 15,593, but which number do you subtract from? Is it 16,211-15,593 or 15,593 -16,211? Would it be a negative number or positive?

what ever your number for 16b is, that number is subtracted from 16a. So if 16a is the bigger number then it would be a positive answer. (ex: (16a)16,211 - (16b) 15,593 = 618)

If it says 16a-16b then you will subtract the b from the a as so:
*Assuming*
16a=16,211
16b=15,593
16a-16b would be 16,211-15,593, int this case it would be a positive number.

16a - 16b = 0
16a = 16b
16a /16 = b
a = b
a and b are equal therefore 16a - 16b would not result to either positive or negative number.

16 211 > 15 593 and therefore, when you subtract the smaller number from the larger number, a positive answer is obtained.

just put in "-" for the word minus. so 16a - 16b.
16a is 16,211 and 16b is 15,593 so 16,211-15,593

a minus b should b A-B,,, look at the mathematics ..we have formulas for a minus b whole square , cube etc........written like (a-b)...!!!
so here the no u get as a result will b a positive no..

If some one says a minus b, it is written as a - b and will be +ve if a is bigger than b and - ve if a is smaller than b.
In your case, if you say 16,211 minus 15,593, you have to write as 16,211 - 15,593 and it will be + ve.
