I was born and raised in Las Vegas and pretty much know the city inside and out. If you don't like the strip or downtown, it is just a normal city with your average malls, movie theaters, gyms, bowling lanes, etc. Except there is alot of smog, people, and traffic. However, without seeing the strip, I don't find that there is anything magnificent about the city. It is very possible to hit the strip without gambling or drinking and there are so many amazing things to see there that are just asthetically pleasing. Each casino has its own special theme and mood and each has something special about it worth seeing. I moved away 2 years ago when I was 22 years old and I love going to see what is new and what has changed every time I go to visit my family there.
As far as downtown is concerned, Fremont Street is not the safest looking place you will ever go, however, it is unique and it can be anything you want to make of it. There is the Fremont Street Experience with an overhead light show and live entertainment almost every night on the stage in the middle of all the action.
I think everyone should see this stuff once in their life. It really is a city like none other.
If you are absolutely against going downtown or to the strip, there is always Lake Mead, or head up to Mount Charleston for a weekend resort in the mountains. If you visit in winter, you can rent a cabin and ski/snowboard at this beautiful resort.
That is about all I have, its just like a normal city with a big magnificent street like no other right smack dab in the middle, but it really does have a tremendous abount of personality and if you look past all the little things you don't like about it and make something amazing from it, you will have a really good experience and see alot of amazing things.

The best value buffets are not on the strip.
The strip is for tourists that don't have transportation to get off the strip, and are a captive audience for the overpriced meals. Way overpriced IMO.
Locals eat off the strip.
Try the Orleans, Silverton and Main Street Station (Downtown) for great value buffets, AND you can get 2 for 1 coupons for the buffets by oredering a book called
AMERICAN CASINO GUIDE 2007 Edition. (Author Steve Bourie) Available on Amazon, eBay etc. Coupons good until Dec '07, also good for some shows and a few casino bets.
You need to go downtown and get the FREMONT STREET EXPERIENCEfun book coupons for a Main St 2 for 1
It's well worth the cost of the book if you are going to LV for 3 or 4 days or more. LOADS of great coupons in this book.
Silverton Lunch Buffet is $9.95 and 2 for 1 in the book, amazing meal for 2 for $10 !!
Others are $15 max, but 2 for1's are in the book.
You need a car to get off the strip for Silverton or Orleans, but you can take a bus downtown for Main Street Stn.
The book is WELL worth the cost if you are there for a few days with a car. Have Fun !

Why don't you hop in AirWolf and go visit the surrounding countryside???? Just Kidding Jan.
Actually Vegas is an outdoor lovers dream. Biking climbing and rafting arent far away. Zion national park is about 2 hours away if you want to do some amazing hikes. Do the narrows.
Also Red Rock Canyon. Golf is great around as well. Pretty much anything you want. This town was made for tourists. If you look you will find something you want to do other than throw money on a table.

I suppose you could stay somewhere like the palms, rio, south point, red rock, orleans, gold coast, Sams town, hard rock etc (none of these hotels are on the strip or downtown)
Its a bit like saying should i go to new york and not go to manhatten?? I am sure a good time can be had without visiting the strip or downtown

sure! there are many other casinos that are considered more for locals, but away from the hustle of the strip. Sam's Town can be fun.
