Sears tends to have pretty good sets of useful pieces, and lots of choices. You can get a socket set (SAE and Metric), a wrench set, etc... Also remember that Craftsman branded tools carry a lifetime exchange at the store. That's worth a lot to me. Better to put together the kit yourself, as you've suggested, than to buy a weird setup with tape and such.

Sharla, if you really wanna get the perfect tool set for your husband, heres what you do, you ask him. A man appreciates the right gift more than the surprise, especially if he's an alpha male who likes his tools anyway, he's probably likely to have what he wants already. The last thing a man wants are duplicates of the same tools making it hard to keep them organized. If you absolutely have to keep it a surprise, heres the plan to the perfect toolset. 1.) Find out what project he's gonna be working on, rebuilding an engine, building a garage, building a bar in the basement etc. 2.) Take some photo's of the tools he has to the Home Depot/Lowes/Auto Zone etc. 3.) Let them know what he's doing, and what your price range is. You get what you pay for in tools more than anything, a cheap hammer will break, a cheap drill will burn up with heavy use. Let them know how much he does projects like this. Keep the receipt. 4.) Even better than buying all those tools and bringing it to him, you might wanna do this, and this still counts as sweet. Have the people at the store help pick out everything he'd want. Then have them put it on an estimate. Then buy a gift card for that estimate amount, including sales tax. Then present that to him. That gives you the "I'm such a sweet thoughtful hardworking gift buyer" along with the fact that he's really gonna get a set of tools that he wants and needs. I've worked at Home Depot, Menards, and Lowes, and have been remodeling homes for 10 years. I know my tools, and I know what men and women want when they shop for tools.

Sear's Craftmans are usually a good standard brand of tool.. They also have a lifetime warranty on most of there products, so if something breaks it can be replaced.. You may need to buy some things seperately... Hope that helps good luck
