Im due tomorrow and if nothing happens by thursday I am scheduled for a non stress test...I was just wondering how long do these tests usually last? And is it the same as being hooked up to the monitors in the hospital? I went in last week for some bleeding and they hooked me up and checked the babies heartrate and to see if I was contracting...whats the difference?

In a non stress test they hook you up to the monitors that you have hooked up while you are in labor, and they give you a button to push everytime the baby moves. When you push the button it marks the paper, to look at the heart rate while baby is active. You are normally monitored for 45mins-1hour. Its not a big deal. good luck.

They last about 20 -30 minutes unless there is a reason to go longer, they will tell you if you need to be watched longer and why. One monitor is for contractions and the other is for baby heart beat. Its the same thing as what the hospital did. They just want to make sure that everything is still good. The diffrecne at my clinic vs hospital is the clinic monitor keeps record on paper not computer.

Sounds like that was what you had in the hospital. I have 2 non-stress tests per week and they have me lie down and strap two monitors on me - one for the baby's heartrate and one for contractions. Mine have taken anywhere from 20 minutes to 1 hour, depending on how long it takes for the baby to move several times and get several (at least 3) good readings. I use the time for a mid-day nap!

Good luck!!!

It's basically the same thing. I'm considered high risk so I go for this test twice a week.. They hook you up to the machine to watch you for contractions and the baby for his/her heart rate and movements. Basically they are looking for the baby's heart rate to elevate three times in 20 mins. Every time you feel the baby move they have you press a clicker. Essentially, they want to make sure that the baby in not in distress. Good luck!

you will be hooked up to the monitor and they are basically looking for a minimum number of movements within a certain amount of time. if the baby is sleeping they will try to wake it up with a vibrating type tool against your belly or have you drink some juice. most people have no problems and it just buys you a little more time if you are hoping to avoid being induced. if they cannot get a response from the baby or they notice you are having contractions and the baby isn't handling them well... they may schedule you to be induced. good luck!

I had so many of these and yes it is the same machine. Most likely you will go before then. They set up mine for one of my sons and I never made it to then. If you have to alls it is, they hook you up and you sit there and be relaxed. Every time the baby moves you push the little button. They are looking for the baby to make so many movements in 20 mins. That will tell them if the babies heart rate is going up and back to normal when moveing. That way they know if the baby is not in stress to have naturally from inducion. Everything will go fine! good luck and wish you the best!

There isnt one really. They hook you up to the monitors, maybe give you some sugary food and have you push a button every time the baby moves. Then they compare the heart rate and amount of movement.

Its usually about 30 minutes to an hour.

I hate the NST's but its imperative that I have them, I go twice a week, Monday's and Thursday. I'm having twins and they tell me to eat at least a half hour before my appt. so they can monitor there movements and heart rates. It depends on how long your doctor wants to monitor you. Usually its 30 minutes, but I have to be monitored for 1 hour.

nothing... a non stress test is where they hook up the monitors to hear baby's heartbeat. they could be 20 mins- hours depending on what your doc needs.
