Sodium sulfate is the sodium salt of sulfuric acid. With an annual production of 6 million tonnes, it is one of the world's major commodity chemicals. Anhydrous, it is a white crystalline solid of formula Na2SO4; the decahydrate Na2SO4·10H2O has been known as Glauber's salt or, historically, sal mirabilis since the 17th century.

As a general term, a substance is said to be anhydrous if it contains no water.

Over time, glauber's salt may lose water and weight.

Calcium oxide (CaO), commonly known as burnt lime, caustic lime, lime or quicklime, is a widely used chemical compound. It is a white, caustic and alkaline crystalline solid. As a commercial product lime often also contains magnesium oxide, silicon oxide and smaller amounts of aluminium oxide and iron oxide.

lime is a basic anhydride and reacts vigorously with water.
When exposed to water, it reacts and gains weight.
