These are two very different sounds you are talking about here. A good song, I think, needs both these elements.

And it also depends on whose playing.
I like bass a lot, my favourite bassists being Paul McCartney, John Deacon and John Paul Jones and sometimes the bloke with RHCP, can't remember his name. But I've heard some bass players who make me wanna cry - total crap.
Same for electric guitar - I like Clapton, Brian May, and of course, Jimi Hendrix. But there are some who I would totally hate to hear.
So, yeah, it depends on who plays. And also on the listener's mood. Bass is usually warm and makes you wanna dance (remember Another One Bites the Dust?). Electric guitar can be anything - not necessarily hard rock. I've even heard someone play Fur Elise on their elec guitar.
Both look cool, but they sound very different.

I've been a bassist for 24 years because of the sound. Bass makes people resonate. People feel bass. Guitar totally rules, but I will listen to bass players anyday. Without us, guitarist would have no foundation to rock out over.

It's not an either/or proposition.
The Bass is responsible for the melodic bottom and the guitar is responsible for rhythm/lead.

Bass, but electric guitar is harder and cooler to play.

I could sit all day listening to a bass player.

lead electric, but the bass is a necessity or else the song can sound weird.

deffinitely guitar, but it does depend on the song. for instance, by the way by RHCP has tons of bass, but little guitar, and it sounds awsome.
