i have a 55 gallon aquarium, it has been up for about five years with no problems. a week and a half ago i bought an african ropefish. he has been acting very weird the past few days. he swims belly up and i dont think he is eating. plus two of my other fish have suddenly been acting funny too. their fins look like they are drooping and its hard for them to swim. someone told me they thought it was some sort of fin dosease. anyone have any ideas?

You really need to work out how to do a water change in the tank. If it's been running for 5 years, you must have changed some water before. The first best step in most any treatment is a water change.

This sounds like an internal infection to be that has spread to other fish. The best treatment for that would be Furanase or Cipro. My next choice would be Maracyn TC (or any other tetracycline)

The fins that appear to be drooping may be damaged from fin rot, ammonia problems or from being attacked by the ropefish. Check the ammonia before you do that wiater change and change enough to correct the problem if it's high.

If it's fin rot, the above treatment will take care of it as it works on the internal infection.

if you didnt quaritine, then yes there is a high possibility that a disease came in.

try changing the water and adding alittle extra aquarium salt.

getting a medication like jungle buddies fungus clear and paracite clear will take care of any health problems that they may have/

Aquarium salt isn't for saltwater tanks, it is to kill diseases and parasites. Aquarium salt is what you need, it won't harm your fish. They will have it at the pet store.
