Cause it probably looks like a big cave to them & they probably think they are little, itty, bitty bats.

It's soft material for them to feed on. Same with the back of the ear. I've seen kids camping who get attacked by gnats, feeding on the back of their ears & lobes. It's nasty.

Sod's law. The same as why after I've covered all my windows in mosquito netting do I have a swarm of fruit fly's?! I'm trapped in with them! AAGGH

Because they are attracted by heat and sweat. They get close to your nose, and eyes, because there is a concentration of body heat emitting from those areas.
