There is always annoying people that won't leave even if it's late and the music is over. Elvis' managers were forced to make him announce he was leaving because before there had been cases of huge crowds of people that would hang out (for days) in the place were the concert had been held asking when Elvis would come back and where the bathroom was.

People would wait frantically for hours for the King to appear. When he arrived, they would continue the frenzy. this was great publicity however when he left, people would still be there screaming, fainting, and yelling for an encore. ( Entertainers would take an intermission during the show.) If he was gone, the fans would go from an excited frenzy to an aggressive frenzy when he didn't come out for one more song. Promoters would announce that "Elvis has left the building" so that they could get some closure on his performance and so the crowds would have a cue that the show was over. It became his trademark exit!!

I think it was because so many thousands of his screaming fans wouldn't leave the concert hall until they announced that he had left, because they were hoping he would come out 1 more time or they might get to catch another glimpse of him. His fans went totally nuts, my Aunt saw him the last time ne performed in concert & she said every 5 minutes women were being carried off from fainting from excitement.

The same reason I have to announce when I'm leaving a building too. Our rabid fans demand to always know where we are so they can follow and be near us..
