i bought a book where it lists all agencies in NYC. should i trust it, or can it be a scam?

Most likely it's fine, but what's the book? If it's Ross Reports, go with it :-) Cross reference the agencies in that books with those at Sag.org and Ross reports and you'll be fine.

My general advice on finding agents is to stick with the SAG list, but being that you'r in NY there are a ton of legit agents who are not on that list and Ross Reports will have them.

To submit to an agent, send them your headshot, resume, and a cover letter stating that you are seeking representation and wait to see if they call you in for an interview. If you have a reel you can send that too. Also, if you're in a show invite them to come see you perform.

If you purchased "The Ross Reports," it is a legitimate publication used by, probably every actor in NYC.

Yes, you can trust the agencies and casting directors listed.
The publication has been around for many, many, many years.

Make sure you have a strong resume with a lot of LEAD roles in plays. NY agents primarily submit actors for theater. Make sure your acting is very strong.
