I had not read about this in the news media, but it makes sense to me provided

* The owner of a car cought in illegal street racing is found to be a multiple offender and not stop it.
* The laws of California give the police of Los Angeles the authority to do this

You may or may not be aware of this, but in Europe, if the police catch someone driving a car without proper insurance, they have the right to tow the car not to the impound lot but to the place where the car is destroyed & the scrap metal auctioned off.

Having the proper insurance means both having it on your person, and having it in the insurance company computer system.

It certainly sends a clear message and cuts down on repeat offenders. Remember in order to qualify for the crusher a car must have some stolen parts on it.

As a former "Ricky Racer" I know for a fact many people into street racing aren't too picky where their parts come from and some actually go out and become midnight auto suppliers themselves.

That sort of stuff goes all the way back to the late 1940's. You'd be surprised at the number of big name NASCAR drivers who have done similar dubious deeds in the wild and crazy days of their youth.

It seems to me that instead of destroying the cars and ticking off the car owners, it would help the LA Police image if they tried to be-friend the car owners. How about having the police sponsor a racing event that teaches safety instead of being so eager to destroy property?

I think it is a great way to attempt to deter the idiots that seem to think they can fly down the expressway like it is their personal race course and risk injuring or killing anyone that happens to be in their way. I have seen far to many little 4 cylinder cars come flying along at double the speed of the rest of traffic weaving in and out over the last few years.

What they should do is confiscate the car and then use it to catch the racers. Don't destroy something that they could use to their advatage. Good god doesn't anyone in any type of government office have any active grey matter between their ears.

The more the better. These idiots put innocent lives at risk, I say leave them in the car while they destroy it. Clean the gene pool a little.
