Actually the perception is that he is going to trial for dogfighting, but the crux of the case revolves more around the belief that he bankrolled a dogfighting ring which in turn was a means to gamble. The feds are really looking to nail him for running a multi-state gambling operation and not necessarily for dog fighting.

They are charging him with racketeering and the transport of dogs across state lines with the intent of fighting them.

The VA state law is irrelevant in this case since the feds are prosecuting the case and not the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Michael Vick was indicted on federal criminal charges. That's right, I said federal. He is screwed. I have a better question. Why would someone with so much potential mess something like that up by dogfighting? He is a bonafied retard!!!

Because dogfighting is illegal, and there is evidence that he was involved in it. So pretty much, you do something illegal, you have criminal charges brought against you in court.
