Technically your supposed to. Of course this would mean you have to pay more so most waitresses either leave it off or claim only a portion of what they actually brought in. Unless your job is somehow keeping up with it how is the IRS going to know?

Most states pay waitresses around $2.13 an hour plus tips. Yes you are taxed on our tips. At Friendly's your tips aren't going to be that great. For the most part you can expect the rare 5-10 dollar tips from large tables. Most people at friendly's will only tip 1-2 dollars. You need to try for Applebee's, Olive Garden, or a steak place where a 5 dollar tip will be on the low range of the average.

I always claim 8% of my sales. If your credit card tips add up to more than 8% then you have to claim 100% of your credit card tips. When I worked in a bar I would track my sales for the week and then make sure that I had claimed 8% by the end of the week.

Yes, the restaurant where I worked had me calculate 15% of my total sales for the day. -- so sometimes I would make more and just pocket the rest. And sometimes I wouldn't quite make it and that day would cost me more money than I made. I hated to wait on tables -- I worked in a really upscale restaurant and usually carried at least $100 cash (up to $400 cash on a good night) in my pocket when i walked out the door -- but those taxes kill you when you at the end of the day.

Yes! Check with your employer. Some employers will automatically put a percentage on your W-2 that you will need to pay taxes on. with most tips left on a credit card - its almost impossible not to claim them. You will owe taxes on that money at the end of the year.

Yes. If counted by your emplyer they should be in the box labels Tips on your W-2. Other wise you keep track and put them in as unreported tips on the tax form.
