Joe Montana or Dan Marino. And why?

It's Dan Marino. Joe Montana was surrounded by a lot of other great players on offense and defense and had the best RB of his time in Roger Craig and the best WR of all time in Rice. Also, the west coast offense was new and teams were just learning how to defend it. Marino never had any of the advantages on the field that Montana had - like a good running game, a great o-line, and a stellar defense - but still managed to put all of Montana's career numbers to shame. And using the argument that Montana is better because he won Super Bowls doesn't cut it, because teams win Super Bowls, not individual players.

Joe Montana over Dan Marino. No doubt that Marino had some amazing seasons and is one of the greatest ever, but Joe performed was still better. Superbowl Rings don't mean that much, I feel. The team wins a Superbowl, not a single player. But Joe's team was getting far into the playoffs and was better able to prove his big game ability. Dan Marino I'm sure would have been able to prove his big game ability if given more chances. Joe had amazing chemistry with his players as well. Joe didn't need Jerry Rice to be great, he just always was. It is very close between Marino and Montana. Marino finished with many records, though. Montana was better by just a little, I think.

Fantasy owners get caught up in stats, but the NFL isn't about stats or records. It's about winning, which is a big reason why Joe Montana was the better QB.

While the numbers that Dan Marino put up will be reached by precious few, that he failed to lead his team to a Superbowl victory will ever haunt his career.

Excusing that failure to the lack of surrounding talent does not acknowledge the exceptional players that team had during the start of his career. Mark Duper and Mark Clayton were very talented receivers and played with Marino for 10+ seasons. And if that team were so devoid of talent, just who was catching all of those passes?

Only once in Marino's career was the team under .500 and they made the post season 10 times. Only once did they reach the Superbowl in all of those opportunities.

There is no knocking his talent, however that was a team built year-after-year around his ability to pass the football. And ultimately he failed to bring Miami a Superbowl title.

You put Dan Marino against any QB in history and you will still always at least consider Marino. However, personally I like Joe Montana. The reason I chose Joe is his performance in big games and pressure situations. The 4 Super Bowl rings are attractive as well.

As a passer, the answer is Marino...As a leader and overall QB, it is Montana. Joe had the pose to always lead his team and win the big game.

I had to say it but Dan Marino. His pure quarterbacking skills were more evident. Not that Joe is a worse quarterback, but Dan had to use his skills way more.

Joe Montana. Montana played hard with his team to win games while Marino only played to maximize his own stats.
