If you are a black person , start at home ! What kinds of experiences have you had as a black person.
Ask mom and dad what like was like for them growing up.
Continue on to other members of your family.
I'll bet your Grandparents have some vivid memories of the troubled 60 s and before.
Two books that are real eye openers are:
MY FOLKS DON'T WANT ME TO TALK ABOUT SLAVERY

Edited by Belinda Hurmence
BEFORE FREEDOM-WHEN I JUST CAN REMEMBER also edited by Hurmence
These are first hand interviews with former slaves.
If you are young , I must warn you that these folks had a unique point of view -you must keep in mind that slavery was all they ever knew and there perspective will be different from what we have today-some of the language is a little blunt and rough.
I believe that a lot of the conversations with the white interviewers were rather guarded understandably---as self protection

Talk to your family especially the Elders. I'm a writer and the release date for my new book was 7/23/07. It is titled "Love's Soft Voice." It is the love story between a Native American man and an African woman who is a runaway slave. The ISBN is 1-4241-8190-9. It is filled with love, adventure, culture, and history. It is historical fiction; however, the story is based on a legend that has been passed to me from my Ancestors. It is actually the origin of my family. It is avaliable at amazon.com and I'm sure that any bookstore can order it. I'll list places below that carry the book. If you order it, please send me an email to rubybgc@yahoo.com and let me know how you like it. It will keep your interest. I'm hoping it will become a movie.

Ask your grandparents, go to the library and look in the history section.
