Yes it will slow you down. Approximately 20% on a slower computer especially.
When the trojan hits your computer, that you have to reformat for and loose everything on your hard drive, you'll find that 20% slow down was quite a better alternative. Or then again, maybe not.

Norton 2003-2006 were huge resource hogs that would slow all but top-of-the-line machines down.
Norton 2007 has been completely re-done and now uses a somewhat more reasonable amount of computer resources.
To remove Norton download and run the Norton Removal Tool from the Norton / Symantic website.

Uninstall those programs, as they pretty much suck.
Check out Ad Aware, by Lavasoft. Free program, catches a lot more than Norton, etc.

Yes! The next time you buy an antivirus, buy Kaspersky. It is blazing fast, and eliminates most virus that Norton can't. Let me give you a result of a test:
Paid Anti-Virus Comparatives:
Norton eliminated about 95% of viruses, and malware.
Kaspersky eliminated about 99.69% of virus and malware.(blazing fast scan speed, does not slow your computer while a scan, or at all)
McAfee(slowest antivirus ever, never get this!) eliminated 95% as well.
Bit Defender eliminated 98% of viruses and malware.(very fast, but kaspersky better)
Free Anti-Virus Comparatives:
1) Aol Active Virus Shield eliminated 99% because it is free and made from Kaspersky. But it said in its privacy policy that: "when you register with us and use the Software, you provide us with certain personally identifiable information (your "APS Product information"). The following privacy provisions explain the information practices that apply to you as a user of the Software and its related features. Your use of our or our affiliates' other products, or third party offerings, is governed by their own privacy policies."

2) AVG eliminated 83% of viruses and malware.

3) Avast eliminated 85% of viruses.

4) Antivir eliminated 95% of viruses and malware, but it doesn't have a firewall.

There are many other free virus protection that are free that I could have listed, but I don't reccomend them cause they only provide virus scans, they don't have a firewall, or real protection. Real Protection is when an anti-virus warns you when you download.
