I assume that you are quite young to ask this question.
When you reach puberty your body prepares itself for you to have a baby. The chemicals your body produces for this are called hormones.
These cause your breasts to grow and for you to develop hair in the pubic area. The hormones also stimulate your ovaries to produce an egg. This is fertilised by the male sperm when you have intercourse (sex). At the same time the lining of the uterus becomes thick for the egg to grow in if it is fertilised.
If the egg is not fertilised then the lining of the womb is shed-that is your period. After the period is finished the same thing happens again.
The egg is produced, the lining becomes thick you become pregnant and do not have a period or you do not become pregnant and have another period

Because you're not pregnant.
Your body prepares for pregnancy every month by releasing an egg. The inside of your uterus is lined with a membrane that is ready to feed a fertilized egg and start growing a baby.
If the egg comes down and is not fertilized... your body gets rid of all of it, and starts over the next month.

seriously....? because your body is ovulating, and getting ready to become pregnant by building up the lining on the inside of your uterus, when you don't get pregnant, your body goes back to it's normal state and sheds the excess lining.
