You could use some mineral spirits and any old spray or oil based paint you have. If you use a water based stain such as boiled leaves or water paints then you will raise the grain and need to re-sand the wood. When I read your question I thought some wine might be great, but again you'll have raised grain. You might try an ammonia tent. Once you assemble what you want to stain you put in a plastic tent with an open pan of ammonia keep refilling the ammonia, and after a week it will darken the wood. The wood doesn't pick up the smell, but while you're doing it the smell will invade your house.

Basically, you can use thousands of things to make a stain. I have even seen Rit fabric dye used to stain wood. The problem comes in getting the desired color. After staining with a homemade stain, I hope you don't need to match the color in the future.

You can use many things as stain, including fruits, vegetables, coffee, tea, etc. However, most of these options are feasible only as a water based stain for a D.I.Y. project. As far as the person who mentioned using am monia, this is what scares me about this forum!!! Wrong answers are one thing, wrong, DANGEROUS answers are another. Ammonia is not used to stain wood, it is used to FUME wood, and it does not involve household ammonia. You can get beautiful color from fuming, but if you decide to try this method PLEASE research the process first and do it safely.

Unless you plan on opening a paint company you are better off going to the store and buying some. If you want commercial grade then go to a Kelly Moore or Sherwin Williams.

You can buy stain concentrate and tint your varnish. I would be dubious about how well you could tint mineral oil.
