You don't need a rental car. There's an airport shuttle that takes you to your hotel from the airport. To get to places around Vegas, you can ride the monorail (I've never rode one before), or a taxi (I think they're pretty cheap).
On Vegas.com, it says that in October it's usually:
High: 82° F (28° C)
Low: 54° F (12° C)
Cool thing you're taking your wife this year. I heard it's really good, and that it's her last year.
Also, I hope you're used to smoking, 'cause it'll be everywhere in the casinos (but not in performance places, like the Celine concert)

I've traveled to Vegas during the month of October before. Bring a light jacket for the evenings. The weather was like springtime to me 60-75 degrees. Nice and pleasant. You definately don't need to get a rental car. It would be a waste of money if you don't plan on going anyway outside of the strip. There are shuttle services you can use to and from the airport. You have the Las Vegas Monorail or Deuce Bus System on the strip.
Have Fun!

Have you ever been there? You said first time, so I assume you have not. Be prepared for being overwhelmed by the LIGHTS!!
Most people walk everywhere there, because of the main strip-- if you are going to be staying on the main strip, do not worry so much about a car....I think there are buses too if you are going to be going more than a mile or so. I got married there unfortunately--- lol--- I do not like the place so much anymore. But I have been there many times- I would have to say I love the hotel rooms, just being able to turn the AC down as low as you want and not worry about paying for it- heeh, a good nights sleep there! But then again I love hotel rooms--
Celine Dion eh? I have never been to a show there, but I hear they are amazing. Go to the coca cola factory while you are there- they have cokes from around the world you can taste. It's very interesting~
OH and October should be PERFECT weather, if not too warm. NO COAT!!

I would say no to a rental car unless you plan to drive out of the city. The traffic in Las Vegas is horrific. Stick to taxicabs and busses - or just walk! If you plan just a day driving most hotels have rental car desks in the lobby or you can arrange a rental through the concierge desk. The weather in October is great. 70s-80s during the day and 50s-60s at night depending on what time of month. I suggest you bring a light jacket for night time but light casual clothes duiring the day will be fine.

Sounds like your flying in so if your staying on the strip you really shouldnt need a car. There are tons of shuttles and limos that will take you from the airport to the strip fairly cheap. Then you can just walk around or get a cab if need be. I dont think there is a really cold time in Vegas, I dont know if it will be shorts weather but I dont think you will need heavy jackets. One thing you may want to do is check the dress code for the show.

I always rent a car while I am in Vegas. That is because I like driving to places like Hoover Dam, Red Rock Canyon, Death Valley, Etc. If all you are going to do is stay in Vegas and gamble and go to shows a car is not necessary (again where you stay may change the no need for car answer).
It can get cool at night - plan accordingly.

If you stay on the strip then you don't need a rental car. A shuttle can take you to and from the airport and there are cabs a-plenty. There are double-decker buses that take you around the city also, they are cool. Unless you plan to go off the strip or outside of the tourist areas, you can walk. The weather is awesome now, especially at night! Have fun!

One poster said he did not think that Vegas gets cold. He obviously does not live there. It sometimes gets cold enough in the winter to snow. If you are going in late October, take a sweater, though you might not need it.

One thing not mentioned is the tram that runs along the strip - well, actually behind the casinos. You can use this, but I think it is a little pricey for what you get. But I know people who will only use that as their transportation.
