We aren't all fascinated but to answer your question, it is the media. The newspapers and television have an agenda to sell, sell, sell. They want to make as much money as they can so sex sells. This "celebrity" culture that has been drummed up, deflects from what's really going on in the world. They are hiding the real issues such as war and economics etc.... The governments are quite happy with this as it takes peoples minds off the issues that have real importance in our lives. People can also be lazy and uncaring I suppose. Isn't it easier to read about Brad and Angelina than reading about families massacred in Iraq by American or British troops?
Thsi may seem like a rant but I felt the need to answer seriously.

I'm not! I think it's incredibly sad and don't have any time for any celebrities. I'd love to be able to get a magazine that doesn't just discuss the latest antics of someone I've never even heard of. Don't know why people are so interested in others they've never met except maybe they're bored with their own lives.
I don't mean this to be offensive, each to their own.
All the best

Well, I try not to not get too involved in any gossip, etc. being such a damn pansy, but I'll tell you what.
Gossip and all of that is so natural. And it can be very informative, if you do it the right way.
It's how a group of people decide, without really saying it to each other, that "This is right, This is wrong, this what's acceptable among us."
So, I'd much rather have celebrities as examples. I can't in trouble, especially in my new country, rural, claustrophobic, everybody-knows-and-talks-about-everybody-else home, because I'm not hurting anybody I know.
So, I'm not at your level of interest, and I don't even know if that's what motivates you at all.
There's nothing so wrong with it.
None of those people know what you think or what you say, and that's fine.

I am NOT automatically fascinated with them. However, if they make me laugh or make me think then I will be interested in them. Then there are those who I describe as fun to watch...someone like Walter Matheus.
Now I happen to like Lindsay Lohan. Why? Because my grandson and I watched Herbie and she made us laugh and have a good time. I hope she gets out of trouble and stays out of trouble and realize she can offer a lot to people making their lives a little more enjoyable.

part stalkers and part mercantile capatalistic society we are in.. seeing that we can almost do whatever we want (and make a whole lot of money doin it) ..we have the understanding that we ourselves are in some shape or form..MARKETABLE.. with whatever attributes we seem that we can connect with the next individual. Be it a total jack@ss, a ****, a philanthropist, or a beautiful person all around.....whatever. We want to be them because WE are not .. we understand that they are human and depending what area of (Im a make up this one) "Celebrisism' (i.e. sports, acting, media personality, etc) we can relate to what they are doin thru their stories of triumph or despair.. we wanna look them up because some are hot, some are not, some are funny ..and so on.. BUT the reality of it all is that beyond what ANYBODY says..they are just like you and me..they bleed they get their hearts broken, they die, they have kids..rich lil kids.. ya dig?

Maybe it's because subconsciously, we are looking for a role model in our life,
We look upon celebrities as those who have made it in life, and reached their goal, and maybe we want to follow in their footsteps. Not so much fascination, but more curiosity perhaps.
We all need a role model in life, Someone to look up to, and take guidance from, and thanks to media, celebrities are thrown at us from all directions.
I say let's look closer to home, people we know and meet every day, these are real people we can talk to, not some hyped up celebrity who we are unlikely to meet, and don't even know.
A lot of us feel insecure, and take refuge in the make believe world of celebrities.
The only picture I have is one of my girlfriend.
She's no celebrity, but I love her, and see her every day. This gives me a sense of security, knowing I will see her in person, talk to her face to face, and not have to wait and see her on the television.

i'm not
and quite happy to say so
why do people believe they have a right to know everything about celebrities personal lives. they're people too! and would probably appreciate some privacy. people get obsessed and start thinking they have personal relationships with celebrities, well they dont! they know **** all about them, only what the media say they are and what the public perceive them to be.
