I learned about it in a parenting class in high school. (Not that I was a parent yet) It was one of the best classes I have ever taken. It did prepare me for when I had my daughter 5 years later. I learned about circumcision then, and it seemed horrible to me that they do that to babies, but then I thought about it and it is the best thing you can do for them. It will help prevent infection and many other things. All of my friends who have had boys have had them circumcised, because they felt the same way I do and now many hospitals require that you do it before you can leave the hospital!!

I don't recall when I first found out about it, but it was definitely before high school. My husband (whom I first dated at 16) is uncircumcised and since we're SE Asian, it's fairly common not to have the procedure done. I don't find it disgusting or ugly and not having it done does not affect the function of his penis, so I really don't care whether or not a man is circumcised. He also has never had a single infection in his life because he keeps it clean. The research is conflicting and you have to wonder why America is the only country that pushes for circumcision so much. I had a son 8 weeks ago and did not circumcise him. It prevents HIV? Not really. It decreases the chances of contracting it. But so do condoms. I'll just teach my son safe sex instead of cutting off a piece of him. As for him being embarassed in the locker room...I'll raise him to not care and know that confirmity isn't always great. He'll learn that he doesn't need to be a certain way or dress a certain way because it's popular...and also, 75% of the world's men aren't circumcised. If he meets a girl who mocks him for not being circumcised, do I really want my son with such a person? My friends also have sons who weren't circumcised and have had no issues. Each person should be allowed to make the decision themselves and not be lectured on their choice.

I think the American culture really pushed circumsicion a LOT 15 yrs ago and before. Men are still pushing it a lot because they know what it's like to be in the locker room with so many others. I have read contradictory articles about it and we decided to get it done. Not necessarily for cleanliness because there was a lot of proof that it isnt that much cleaner if taught to clean at all but for my husband's worry for my son. A know a few years ago 30% of boys werent getting circumcised ... I think it definately should be an informed decision and make sure you read articles that are completely real - not just anything off the internet

I circumcised my son. I had never seen an uncircumcised penis. I do believe that our culture does effect the way we think about circumcision. The theory is an uncircumcised penis is dirty, as in unclean.

Honestly, as an adult women, we should only see one adult penis, I know this is not very often the case. If I had another son, I would get him circumsised as well.

I have known about it for so long I don't remember when I first found out. My mom used to work in nursing homes and hospitals so she was always talking and telling us kids about the human body. I personally have never been with a guy that has not been circumcised, as, in my age group it was the thing to have done when a boy was born. My husband was circumcised, but he didn't want our son's done until he ended up being born almost 3 months early and suffered from repeat UTIs while in the hospital, and a few after he came home. After we had his done he never had another one.

I thought it was kind of silly until I read recent studies that says circumcised penises are less likely to spread HIV and keeps the entire area a bit cleaner.

I don't have a boy, but if I did, I would do whatever is possible to maintain his health. He won't even remember the surgery if done right after he is born.

I was 13 when my baby brother was born, and we were in the hospital when they took him away to get "snipped" :(
I personally see no reason *not* to. I've known an adult who was uncircumsised, and had the adult surgery, and much prefers the circumsized, for health reasons. Having been through both, he says the health benefits are well worth it. We'll get it done to our babies, so they won't have to do it later, which it's a much bigger deal, and more painful.
