With Edwards..Rogers..Redding and White on the def line, which in probally the best in the NFL. A LB core of Simms..Lenon...Bailey, safteys Kennedy..Bullocks which can overall match up with any teams. And Cb's Bryant..Fischer..Wilson, which are extremely tuff Cover 2 CB's.

Some of the answers so far have been RIDICULOUS (ie. evilstewie) so I thought, as a lion fan, I'd throw in my two cents. Lets start with the line. #1 issue.....The Defensive line. Shawn Rogers(aka Big Baby) can DOMINATE.....when he feels like it! Hopefully, Rod Marinelli can light a fire under his butt. Corey Redding is a wrecking ball at DT and should have another stellar year. Kalimba(I steal my paycheck) Edwards is due, and has been for years now, for a breakout season. Same prob. as Rogers, lack of motivation. D. White is closer to Redding, non stop motor and great football player. He is under-rated due to the fact that he backed up S. Rice most of his career.
LB's are a big ? If healthy, Simms, Bailey, and Lehman can be sick. Problem is they never are healthy! Lenon is a dependable player but lacks the talent.
Here's the real problem......the DB's Kennedy can't cover worth a _____ and Bryant's hurt EVERY year! Stanley Wilson and Daniel Bullocks are the bright spots but they are both young. Hopefully, being in the second year in the tampa two will help at all positions but especially in the defensive backfield.
The whole point of the tampa two, though, is to create havoc starting with the D line. If the qb doesn't have time to throw the ball, it doesn't matter who is in the backfield!!

Here are some statistics that might help you decide if they have a good defense or not...
32nd(last) in 4th down% stopped
31st in time of possession on defense
30th in overall defense
28th in yards allowed per game
27th in penalties
26th in penalty yards
25th in 3rd down% stopped
23rd in yards allowed per play
How many of the guys you named off made the Pro Bowl? 0. Those are just a bunch of names. The reason the Lions defense sucks is because they can't stop the opposing team on 3rd and 4th downs and the defense if out on the field too long because the offense is terrible. They will improve this year on both sides of the ball, but not enough to make a splash yet.

The past is the best indicator of the future. You can come on here and say they are the best in the NFL, but it is all conjecture. The FACT is that the Lions ranked 30th out of 32 teams in defense last year. 30th!! Until they get on the field and prove things have changed, there is no reason for anyone to think that they don't suck. What they look like on paper is absolutely meaningless. Put up, or shut up.
And I'm a Lions fan, too, so it is not team bias I'm spewing here.

I agree, the Lions on paper look good. I think what has happened is that Matt Millen has been a bonehead when it comes to drafting. Granted, Calvin Johnson was great but Roy Williams? Letting Dre Bly go was not smart either. The defense is good, but the offense needs a good QB. They should go after Daunte Culpepper. He has some left in the tank and with John Kitna, they may have a chance.
