Actually bomb proof would be going to a local riding stable. Horses used for schooling are superb for beginners and fairly cheap. Though plodding there once you get feeding them more then just hay they become very efficient horses as they know the ropes can understand general ques and have seen the scariest through their training.

Well I dont live in Indiana but I know here is OKlahoma, Missouri and Kansas prices are so low you can find that all day long at the auctions. Nice broke healthy horses for around $500 . You might think about buying 1 down here then shipping it home still less then $2000. I just bought a nice registered mare that rides and has a buckskin filly by her side and spent $800 on them they were some of the high priced ones at that auction alot went for less then that even if they did have foals. I guess it depends on trained in what?

Here's a few I found, though there were many others suitable for a few dollars more. Check out the first two!

Although there is no 'perfect horse' per say, there is always a better result of what you would want and need if the budget wasn't the top priority. I'm not trying to sound mean, but I have a friend who did this and she has 3 untrained horses.
If you see the term 'broke' it doesn't mean that the horse is extremely safe to ride. Broke means that they're able to saddle, trained means that they'll do anything you ask of them.
When you go see a horse that you're considering, ask the owner as many questions as you can think of. Handle the horse as if it were already yours, and it's not such a bad idea to bring along a trainer or vet to give an 'official report'.

Hmm. Anything under 10 that hasn't been trained is not going to be bomb proof. I have a 2 year old untrained gelding just over the line in Michigan that is very mellow and easy going. He is grade, but a purebred cross of Quarterhorse and Pinto/Arab and offered for 1000 bux. You will have a big search ahead of you, but do look for a really young horse that is as calm as a dead post. I don't know if you can find one on here, but I am sure someone has some online sites you can try...I havent used one in a while, so don't know what's out there. Also, check ads at feed stores, tack stores and local horse newspapers. Equine Times is a good midwest paper with a lot of ads, so is Midwest Hunter and Sporthorse. They probably both have online ads.

I'm assuming you want a dead-broke horse?
Look up a fellow named Sam Melton in Tuscola Illinois. OK it's not Indiana - but not too far from Champaign, IL.
Sam and his son Chad Melton deal in not terribly expensive grade horses. Tell them what you want and how much you can spend and they'll find it for you.
They're good folks and honest, decent horsemen. I bought and sold horses through them for a long time back in the 1990's.

Do you know of anyone around your hometown that has experience with horses ? Sometimes a trainer will help you locate a horse that will suit your needs (for a fee). Try looking in "Showring", it's a magazine and published in Columbus, IN. They a list of horse trainers, classfieds with horses forsale, and places to board a horse if needed. I bought several nice horses this way. Good luck !
