Due to our causing such chaos in Iraq there will undoubtedly be massive upheaval/outright Civil War when we leave but i really do believe it's the only option. All we are doing at the moment is delaying the inevitable, whenever we leave Iraqi's are going to find their new common ground themselves and it's very likely there'll be much bloodshed.

However, currently they're having to deal with massive abuses by the occupying forces too, please read this article before replying, and weep for the Iraqi's.

80% of the world didn't support the invasion in the first place Karleos, sure a few of that huge majority have answered here.

I have always been one of the 80% too.

Leaving aside the issue that "we" should never have been there in the first place. I think a very large number of people have already realised the situation in Iraq is unrecoverable.

To have gone into a country under the guise of liberating it from brutality and effectively creating choas, a cause for terrorists when there wasn't one before and a situation you generally cannot control and then walk away is defeat on all fronts. That is a bitter pill for the politicians to swallow even if it is ultimately what is needed.

The artificially installed (western) political system in Iraq is too weak to stabalise the country and as suggested Iraq needs to find it's own stability and it will be very messy indeed but like the old Yugoslavia, it will get there in the end without us trying to make it be something it's not.

Well, about the only thing I can agree with you about is that the early vampire novels by Anne Rice were really good.

Your view on the war is totally distorted by a Liberal media. You read what they want you to read. Ask yourself one question: how many POSITIVE articles have you ever read about Iraq? They could publish thousands, about grateful Iraqis who have working sewage in their town for the first time ever, or have the decayed infrastructure of roads, electic lines, and schools rebuilt with American help. You never read these articles because scumbag entities like the New York Times believes they can dupe a gullible public. Your view of the Iraqi war is exactly what the Liberal press has presented to you. You know ONLY the information they have carefully chosen to give you.

You are being duped.

The Liberal press makes our situation there look dire, when in fact we are making good progress. Certainly, the insurgents have made things difficult, but they can't hold out forever, because every month that passes, the Iraqi government becomes more stable, and the Iraqi military gets stronger and more experienced.

I read that link you provided. Haven't you ever noticed the press can only dredge up the same, few tired, old stories? How many times will we hear about one girl being raped. Just statistically, that is unbelievably low. It's like building an interstate highway, and having only 1 fatality per year. Just like any country, there are rapes, but those committed by our troops obviously are far below the rate of the local population. Think about that!

Do you really believe that the most powerful nation on earth can't get the Iraqi government strong enough to handle this situation on their own? That ludicrous proposition is exactly what the press is trying to con you into believing. We don't have to stay there and shoot every insurgent. We just have to get the Iraqi government able to stand on its own two feet. That won't take much longer. They are learning month by month. Remember, they are an infant democracy. Everything is new to them.

If we had to, we could lock the entire country down. We have the ability to prevent any civil war from occuring. We absolutely must prevail in this conflict. Once Iraq is a stable democracy, all the other nations will look upon their freedoms with envy and demand the same system, just as the East Germans looked at the West with bitterness that they had to live under Communism while their relatives lived in the prosperous West.

Don't let the press dupe you. Start watching The O'Reilly Factor on Fox News. You'll hear things you won't ever hear elsewhere!

it is hard to beat the enemy when
you can not distinguish them.....

I can't imagine these "suicide bombers" look any different than any other Iraqi civilian. The death toll for this war is mind boggling, and the fact the the American people and their leaders continue to allow this war to continue is sickening.

Fear is not a reasonable excuse for war....It is not sensible to be engaged in a war trying to stop people who may or may not attack you.....

There will be bloodshed, no doubt, but how much blood should we continue to have on our hands.....

the country would implode into civil war if America left. So getting out is completely not a workable solution.

Might as well leave them a couple nukes if you gonna do that. That would solve the problem.

---- and just typical of england?

Dude check the last 100 years of history and name one time when England entered into war lightly. You cant, we dont go to war for nothing. We have been fighting for peace since world war 2 and will continue to do so no matter what other nations think...or we could be like the french and surrender.

This Government is too far up Bushes toushee!!! They keep following the u.s.a and this Government probably feels if they back out now they will be weak as a country. It seems that everyone but the Government realises that Britain should not have been involved and that they should not be there now!!!!

It's going to take a new president that doesn't have to save face by letting a no-win war run our troops in the ground for the workable solution to happen.

Our country's plight really is we won't allow ourselves to effectively fight a dirty war the only way such can be fought....DIRTY--with total disregard for the politically correct UN rules of engagement regarding war.

And Bush isn't strong enough a president to call for our troops to fight just as dirty as the enemy is towards us.

If we fought just as dirty, we'd likely have by now won the war.

And leave what behind

A breeding ground for every terrorist organisation in the world.

A vast expanse of space to set up terrorist training grounds.

A staging post for Afghanistan opium runners

A land fit for exploitation by Iran

A killing fields for the tribe with the greatest number of weapons and men and the biggest support from neighbouring countries.

Rather than just walk away, why dont we go the whole hog and drop an atomic bomb on Iraq, it owuld make more sense than to leave it to decay into utter hell.

So, let me get it right....go in (with everyone supporting it...orginally!!) now it has all gone pear shaped and we haven't won 'the war' quick enough....we should now step out of the country, let Sadams successor take over and committ genocide all over again.......yep, getting out is defintely an option....!!!

They won't find new common ground....the strongest will take over, you just have to look a Mugabee to see what can happen......!!!!

Until there is a strong, independant power in control of the country, they unfortunately won't step out.

Meanwhile our boys are doing a great job and you are only reading about small pockets of the conflict......it is called propaganda.....there are a lot of people glad our boys are there also....!!!

NOTE:- Sorry but 80%------I don't remember a referendum on that one......did I miss it..??????? where is that figure stated as a fact?
