Start with the basics - really these new guys - they're good all right - but listen to the following artists - legends all. They are what the new guys wish they could become.
Ellington - need I say more? No one could be smoother than the Duke
Louis Armstrong - Call him Pops, Satchmo - doesn't matter - he was there when it all started - and his small group recordings - the hot 5's or the hot 7's are, each one a gem.
Modern Jazz Quartet - 4 old men in tuxes showing everyone how it's done.
The Hot Club of France - Reinhardt and Grappelli - Acoustic Jazz from Europe. Amazing!
Joe Venuti and Eddie Lang - Violin and guitar - from the US - and just as good as Reinhardt & Grappelli. Wonderful stuff.
Joe Kennedy - modern jazz violin at its finest - and he was a wonderful human being too. Miss him terribly
Dorsey brothers - either or both - smooth - clean.
Jack Tiegarden - trombone - beautiful - like summer at midnight.
Heath Brothers - fun, energetic - yes. oooh yes.
Ellis Marsalis - If you love Wynton and Branford - Dad, Ellis on Piano is more than you can imagine - and he's a great human being too. Nice man - terribly approchable - like his music!
Hope these help.

Spyro Gyra is one of my favorites. Also, Everette Harp, Gerald Veasley, Brian Culbertson, Chris Botti, Rick Braun, Boney James, Lee Ritenour, Larry Carlton and others.
You might want to take a risk and try Pat Metheny, too.

Charles Brown (sometimes I call it "cocktail jazz")
Victor Wooten (jazz bass player)
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones (with a banjo, it's awesome)
George Benson and Al Jarreau (CD is called "giving it up")

how about a little guitar in the mix . . .Mimi Fox is KILLER on the guitar, Vicente Amigo is more the Spanish style, then there's the old standard, Ottmar Liebert.
