Hi,

You wrote if a $ b = b/a -1 then the value of (3$4) 4 (1$2) is...

I assume that last 4 was supposed to be a $ so your problem is really:

if a $ b = b/a -1 then the value of (3$4) $ (1$2) is...

To work this out, do each parentheses first.

If a $ b = b/a -1 then if 3 $ 4 = 4/3 -1 = 1/3

If a $ b = b/a -1 then if 1 $ 2 = 2/1 -1 = 1

This means that (3$4) $ (1$2) = (1/3) $ (1)
Now let's work out this problem:

If a $ b = b/a -1 then if 1/3 $ 1 = 1/(1/3) -1 = 3 - 1 = 2

So (3$4) $ (1$2) = 2 <== answer

I hope that helps!! :-)

I assume you meant:

4/3-1 $ 2/1 -1
=1/3 $ 1
= 1/(1/3) -1 = 2
