I was driving through Oklahoma this weekend on I-44. And every 10 miles or so there would be a sign posted saying something to this effect:
Do not drive through smoke
What is causing the smoke? Why would you drive through it?/ Is smoke on interstates an issue in Oklahoma?
I travel extensively and have never seen a sign like this.

Sometimes they control-burn prairie grass or deadwood to keep from a wildfire sparking out of control. You see it prominently in Northern Oklahoma between Enid and Tulsa, especially on I-35 & I-44. I have gone through smoke one time and it is weird because it looks cloudy around you, but in the distance, it is clear. Hope that answers your question!

Smoke is an issue when something is burning. Unfortunately there have been many accidents from people driving through smoke. Oklahoma is just being proactive with the signs. What is wrong with that?

If you were in a rural area, the signs were probably for controlled burns they do to help with forest fires. Florida did this every year. Driving through the smoke could cause an accident. One other thing about the smoke is that it could be poison ivy burning and you could inhale the smoke and get the poison in your lungs.

i've been surfing more than 2 hours today searching for answers to the same question, but I haven't found a more interesting discussion like this. It's pretty worth enough for me.

I used to live in OKC. There are many wild fires and brush fires and that is why the signs are there.
