a haiku is the easiest, they tend to be about nature, it consists of 3 lines first line 5 syllables 2nd line 7, third line 5 again.

okay...here's one way to do it. Make a list of what you think of when you think of your "pappy". Write down anything that comes to mind...pretend you had to completely describe him in 10 words or less. Then look at your list...does it really say how you "feel" about him? If you were dying and this was the last thing you could show him...does it say what you'd want him to know and remember? Probably not...so do it again.

When you finally have the list, think of a way to say it a few words at a time. It doesn't have to rhyme, but if a few words rhyme here and there it's no problem either. If you try to make it rhyme, and you haven't written poetry before, it will sound like a nursery rhyme, so you're better off avoiding that outcome by just saying what you really feel inside, a few words at a time. It could look something like this:

"when I think of you
I remember how you held me
strong hands that lifted me
to the sky that was my room"

You'll notice that there were no rhyming words, yet there is a certain "feel" or "sound" to these words...your words will do the same. Just paint him a picture with words that tell him how you remember him and what he means to you. You'll bring tears to his eyes...and trust me, he will be proud.

I personally think freeverse is the best. You don't have to rhyme but you can. no rules. I wrote a couple poems, check out my Q&A. Start by maybe jotting down a few feelings you feel for your pappy and then just write down what you feel in lines and stanzas. This site has a rhyming dictionary (check the top right corner). poeticpower.com

You must think a lot about all the things that your pappy does for you and then you write it down ,sort of a thank you note to him from you .
Your pappy is very Lucky to have you !
