Did you know that the true Springfield is located in Kentucky? If you look on a map south of Louisville, you'll find Springfield. Keep looking around and you'll find a Shelbyville too. There are 4 episodes where they give away the true state that the town is located in:

1. Troy McClure reveals it in a special show.
2. Lisa points to a map in the general vicinity of Kentucky (which is slightly dotted out if you look closely).
3. Mr. Burns remarks how the power plant's runoff has turned the grass "blue" (bluegrass = Kentucky).
4. Homer jokes about Kentuckians in an episode during Season 7 (or 8).

While Troy McClure does say "this Kentucky family", there are other clues that need to be explained then. Like bordering Maine and the ocean for instance...Kentucky does neither.

MG once said in an interview "that Springfield is purely fictional...or is it?"

Except for the had the opening of the movie in the state they are going to base the TRUE Springfield.... they picked Vermont! I thought it should have been Texas, you thought Kentucky.... Either way we both lost b/c the writers got the final say.
