that's weird for a mother-in-law to give an 8x10 portrait.
Anyway, the best place to put it is in a frame and in a drawer, preferably face down, in a place where you can bring it out quickly if asked where it is, or if she comes over to see you. It does not belong in the bedroom for sure.
Since I do genealogy I'd say to keep the picture as someone sometime in the future may be doing the family tree and you can give it to them for posterity.
