Make sure your washing machine is clean. Just use a wash cycle with bleach added in. Or you can use vinegar and Baking soda. If the clothes are mildewed, just washing them won't get the smell out. Use a 1/2 cup of ammonia in the rinse cycle. Plus remember if you are using too many dryer sheets or fabric softener, they use wax and it sticks to the clothes and traps dirt and other smells after the nice smell wears off.

First clean your washing machine of all the residue left by the soap you use . Take a 1/2 gallon of white vinegar and fill your washing machine with the water and pour in the vinegar, Let it run the whole cycle without clothes. Now you can clean your clothes when you get to the rinse cycle add 2 cups of vinegar to the rinse water and that will remove any odor you might have (Vinegar is an odor eater) When you dry the clothes no more smells.

I don't know if you have Well Water which is also called Hard Water, if so, this will make them have that 'dirty / even musty smell', best least "expensive" suggestion I have is to buy a nice smelling Fabric softener & add to both the Wash & Rinse cycle's. Since City or Rural Sub-divisions that have Central water are usually treated with chemicals like chlorine & floride, they don't usually have that problem. Otherwise, consider calling to have your water tested, water treatment Companies are listed in the phone book & they can make suggestions 'chemically' Good Luck

Even a washing machine needs to be cleaned put a cotton towel in the machine with a little powder/detergent and put it on the hottest wash this will clean the inside of your machine and keep it in good condition. If you have left wet clothes in the machine for a while ie days then that will be the cause of the dirty smell give them another wash after you have cleaned your machine as advised above.

Best thing I can suggest is to , run your washing machine on the highest setting (NO CLOTHES INSIDE) normally 90ºc. Add a cup off bleach, do the same again and add a cup of vinegar. This will give the pipes and the inside of your machine a good clean. This should rid the smell

Rewash them...Use a detergent that contains a large amount of perfume. ( I got some generic detergent and the clothes smelled like they were never washed afterwards..... pit stink etc.. I was so mad... and I was in a hurry for work.)
Also dryer sheets are good too...
If it is your water supply that has a stink to it you might want to consider having it looked at if rewashing your clothes doesnt cure it

I am afraid you will have to wash them again ... no shortcut!
if you put some deodorant on them, they will smell even more than before... and after you wash them again, they must dry properly under a nice sun, the wind and heat will take the smell off!... ^o^
good luck....

If you leave them in the washing machine wet too long before drying them, they can get mildew. You have to rewash them.
