10 inches is deep enough, that just isn't enough space for them. Goldfish get 2 feet long, if you put it in too small of a space, it gets stunted. When stunted, the fish appears not to grow, but the organs continue to grow. Stunting causes organ failure and death. Don't do it. Instead, some White Cloud Minnows might be a better option. They will school together and only get about 3 inches. You could get about 15, but beware, they breed pretty quickly so you will have more, very quickly.

I dug a pond once and put polythene in as a liner. I had 3 koi carp but then next doors dog trashed it and I thought he ate the fish. There was just a couple of inches of sludgy mud in the bottom. About a month later I got around to cleaning up the mess and found one of the fish alive and wriggling. To this day I don't know how it survived. So yes it probably will live in 10 inches of water, but I reckon it'd be happier if it was deeper. Get small goldfish.

Yes it is deep enough however they will not grow more than a few centremetres long due to the water not being deep enough and i would recommend not having more than 3 or 4 as there will e not enough room.
But it is ok for a couple or young goldfish ad they only grow bigger if there is enough room.

yes ! they sure can. the depth of the tank or pond does not determine 'vulnerability of goldfish jumpin' thats just false ! Goldfish and fish would jump due to stress and anxiety. But having said that your 48" is certainly enough. Fish don't swim up and down, they are happy swimming left and right

In summer, 10 inches is okay as long as it is in the shade and you have lots of lilies for them to hide under. but you'd have to bring them inside and put a thermostat controlled water heater to heat the water to comfortable levels in winter.

yes depending on the size of the goldfish. they would be very vulnerable though and if unhappy can jump out easy.

i'd put a small koi in it. but you will need a filter if you don't want the water to be so green you can't see the fish! if it gets real cold in the winter you will have to bring it inside with a suitable tank. kois are pretty strong too!

Yes, but don't get big ones. Also goldfish have an amazing ability to limit their growth according to the size of their bowl, pool, pod etc.
