We have a large overgrown cactus bed on property we have recently inherited and wish to eradicate the entire bed, we are wondering how to go about it the best and easiest way.

There could be a few ways to do it. Over watering is, of course, one way, but then you may have a pile of rotted cacti to deal with.

It depends on the size of the cacti, but most have shallow roots in order to soak up water from the surface very quickly. With a shovel, you should be able to get most of them out. Even the plants that have taproots should come out fairly easily, as the roots are not terribly strong.

But, here would be your best bet. Take a picture of your cacti garden and post it at a place like GardenWeb (http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/cacti/) and tell everyone that if they want some free cacti they can have them, but only if they dig them out themselves. Many cacti enthusiasts will take you up on that. You'll be happy because the garden will be gone, and they will be happy to score some nice (and free) cacti to add to their collections.

river85715: has the best answer, but it may take a while.

Me: is just guessing as some catus have tap roots that
grow down 100 feet or more. Depends on the
type of cacti.

Jared W: This will work but is extremely environmentally
unfriendly. This can cause other problems.

Good Luck

Keep in watered. The excess water will kill the cactus and cause it to rot.
