There is actually no official start date for any of the seasons. Traditionally people call the seasons started when the change from one season to the next is generally noticed, the fall started with much cooler nights and less daylight hours.
Recently people have been calling the solstices and equinoxes the starting dates of the seasons, the autumn equinox is on the 21 or 22 of September. The equinoxes mark the dates of equal daytime and nighttime (12 hours each) the solstices mark the shortest and longest daylight hours of the year. These dates don't quite fit start the starts of the seasons as most people perceive them, most years they come a bit earlier then the actual change in the weather.

Fall begins when the leaves on the trees are a slight orange colour, the air is cool in late afternoon, and you find yourself looking for socks.
