According to www.imdb.com Opie Taylor was named for Opie Cates, a prominent bandleader of the 1930s and 1940s whom Andy Griffith and Sheldon Leonard both admired.
So it wasn't a nickname at all.

This is just speculation, but it could be a nickname for Orpheus. I can't think of any other name that "Opie" could be short for.
