Kudos to Russ B. No one really cares. They contribute nothing so they get nothing. Hard economics my young friend. In Africa it is different. It is brutal. Today a young mother threw her baby to a croc, rather then see it starve to death. A terrorist there has killed a baby, hollowed out its insides and filled it with explosives, left it on a bus and killed 70 people because they worship God differently. Somewhere in a village a medicine man is trying to comfort a baby who had poison spit in its eyes by a cobra. There are 1000's of things there that can and do kill or maim.
Just a little effort? You have no idea of the scope of the place. It is bigger then all of S. America. A little effort? What about here at home. People are still living in trailers after a hurricane. We can't fix that, how do we fix a continent?
A little effort? What effort have YOU expended??
Yes, I have been there. Yes it is horrible.

I really am sorry for the way things are in Africa and I wish the rest of the world would help but as far as the democratic and freedom loving West is concerned there is no oil or anything else they want so if they interfere they will get nothing out of it. If there is nothing in it for them you are invisible.

It is disgraceful - but that is how it works.

There are lots of places in the world where terrible things are being done to people but unless your country has something that the US wants - then you are on your own.

It is wrong, immoral and unjustifiable, but for all the codswallop they churn out about bringing democracy and freedom to the world, unless they can run your economy when they move in and drain your country of all its economic advantages for their own prosperity then they will be deafening in their silence.

Hopefully it will change in the future but I wouldn't hold my breath if I was you.

Haven't you ever wonder about the whole Africa? Why its split up into Arabic and blacks nations. Its easier to control! Let them kill each other than no one will wonder why the riches Continent is so poor. Why develop it when we can leave it primitive and steal all of the diamonds and oil. Look who is doing the taking. No they don't want to help they are getting rich while people are dying a slow death. Christians, Jews, catholics, and Arabs where are you we are our brothers keepers.

Because people turn the other cheek if an issue does'nt directly affect them. They're is alot of psychology that plays in to that though.World leaders would rather exploit the African continent, plunder their resources, let genocide continue, cause class wars, the list goes on.I am a black man,and it hurts me to see any race to be exploited in any way.

Many of the problems of Africa have to do with US and European exploitation. Those of you who contend that Africa should fix its own problems are right for the wrong reasons.

Please, Imperialists, leave Africa and Latin America alone. We will do well once we are liberated from your capitalist disease.

edit: people saying there are no riches in Africa. get a map.
Why is the US/UK in Nigeria and the horn of Africa? Why did the US support Apartheid? Oh, there is money to be made in Africa. But the US/UK is interested in keeping that money out of the Africans' hands.

I had rather us be in a war in Africa where these people have begged for help for decades than to have our troops in Irag where the people there never asked for help. There are no resouces left available in Africa that aren't already under control. That's why.

You are wise, Grasshopper. Nobody except do-gooders care about 'Africa' unless it's a part of Africa that has oil....and then of course 'we care' mostly for the thugs that run those parts of Africa that has oil, or some other industrial product so as to prevent the people there from sharing in any of the wealth or causing trouble. Ah, the white mans burden!

There isn't any money in Africa. The diamonds and the oil aren't worth the trouble, so people forget about the continent because there isn't anything in it for them.

What would you suggest? A regime change perhaps? Didn't we just do that with a barbarian and criminal dictator named Saddam Hussein? What would the Democrats say if we go swiftly into Africa and attempt to save hundreds of thousands from their poor leadership?
