Use regular thermometers to monitor the air temps, etc.- at least 2 in the tank (warm and cool ends)

Use IR thermometers to measure specific spots where the snake actuall sits- hiding spots, basking sites, etc. to see what the actual surfaces are measuring.

I spot check about 3-4 places in my tortoise habitat weekly to ensure that the place is safe and to see how temps at those places compare to the other thermometers.

For example- a spotlight shining on a bare rock can heat the rock up quite a bit- but a nearby thermometer measuring the air temp would not read much difference.

my boyfriend's friend had one for his snake and his worked pretty good. i have a bearded dragon and i have a wall thermometer (digital) and it sucks, it could take 20 minutes to give you a reading and then, you don't even know if it's right because it's been sitting there for so long.
Where did you get yours from? Online? I've been looking for one!

I don't know I haven't tried one of these. I use an old fashioned thermometer that sticks on the glass with a sucker.
