Unfortunately the nicotine will cling to every surface it comes in contact with. So smoking by a window just gives the illusion of not stinking up the house. In fact it makes things worse since the smell in not only in your house but is now on your house as well. If you have ever gone to a place that allows smoking outside but not inside you will notice that the smell is embedded in the building, till the building has a really good power wash. You will also notice that buildings that have two sets of doors before entering, you can smell the cigs in the inner area between the two doors since the smell comes in on clothing also. Your best bet if you enjoy smoking is to go outside away from the house and stay outside for a while after you finish. Your body and clothes will still smell but at least you won't be bringing any more than necessary into the home.

Nope-my husband tries it in the winter. He goes into the garage which is attached to the house. He even runs a fan to draw the smoke out. The smell still comes up through the vents and travels into the room connection between house and garage.

Not at all ~ when you open a window, you draw air into the house, and the cigarette smoke. This is why people inside a house can even smell cigarette smoke coming over the fence from a neighbors yard.
